SOROTI — Ocokican Sub-county in Soroti District has received UGX 200 million from the Government of Uganda for the construction of its administrative headquarters, a move expected to improve service delivery and reduce operational costs.
The Sub-county Chairperson, Stephen Geoffrey Ebunyu, confirmed the development, noting that the funds were allocated through the Ministry of Local Government to support infrastructure development at the grassroots level.
Ebunyu explained that since the sub-county was approved in 2017 and became operational in 2021, it has been operating from rented premises, which has affected efficiency and strained its limited resources.
“We have been operating in rented buildings, and this has affected our service delivery due to the recurring costs. This funding is a big relief,” he said.
Stella Apio Echuka, the district councilor representing Ocokican and Asuret sub-counties, revealed that construction of the headquarters has already been commissioned. She noted that the development reflects the commitment of district and sub-county leaders in lobbying for government support.
“It is part of our responsibility as leaders to ensure that government resources are brought closer to the people. This project will greatly improve administration in the sub-county,” she said.
Meanwhile, Moses Odeke, the district councilor for Ocokican Sub-county, emphasized that the construction of the headquarters will significantly reduce expenditure on rent and allow the sub-county to better utilize locally generated revenue.
“This will help us cut costs on rent and redirect resources to other priority areas that benefit the community,” Odeke noted.
Leaders expressed optimism that the new headquarters will enhance coordination of services, improve working conditions for staff, and bring government services closer to residents.
