Medics Warned Against Excessive Alcohol Consumption as Katakwi Mourns Fallen DHO

KATAKWI — A sombre mood engulfed Katakwi District on April 10, 2026, as residents, leaders, and health workers gathered to pay their last respects to the late District Health Officer, Dr. Simon Ichumar Omeke, whose death has sparked renewed calls for responsible living among medical professionals.

The body of the late DHO was first received at the Katakwi District Chambers Hall, where leaders and staff honored his service before proceeding to St. Stephen Catholic Parish for a requiem mass held in the afternoon.

While leading the mass, Rev. Fr. Jonathan Wyok Bahago, Assistant Parish Priest of St. Stephen Catholic Parish under Soroti Catholic Diocese, issued a strong warning to health workers against excessive alcohol consumption, describing it as a growing threat within the medical fraternity.

He expressed concern that alcohol abuse is contributing to the loss of valuable professionals who play a critical role in serving communities. “Alcohol consumption is costing us important people in society. We are losing dedicated medical workers because of habits that can be avoided,” he said.

The priest urged doctors, nurses, and other health personnel to exercise discipline and prioritize their health and responsibilities, emphasizing that their lives are vital not only to their families but also to the communities they serve.

The requiem mass followed an earlier district council session where leaders reflected on the circumstances surrounding Dr. Omeke’s death and broader concerns about the welfare of civil servants.

Rapheal Ojakal, District Councilor for Usuk, called on district authorities to implement council resolutions, particularly those addressing the lack of official drivers for key officers. He suggested that improved facilitation could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“If the DHO had a driver, perhaps this incident could have been avoided. We must take our resolutions seriously,” Ojakal noted.

Moses Iisa, a parish councilor with experience as a driver, echoed the concerns, highlighting the risks associated with long hours of driving. He urged district leadership, including the Chief Administrative Officer, LC V Chairperson, and Resident District Commissioner, to prioritize the safety and welfare of civil servants.

Meanwhile, Silvester Ocatum, Vice Chairperson of the Ikuruka clan, expressed gratitude to the community for the support extended to the bereaved family, both materially and spiritually during the difficult time.

Dr. Simon Ichumar Omeke tragically lost his life in a road accident along the Katakwi–Soroti Road on April 7, 2026. He is scheduled to be laid to rest on Saturday at his ancestral home in Apuuton Village, Central Ward, Usuk Town Council.

His death has not only left a gap in the district’s health leadership but also ignited important conversations around lifestyle choices, workplace facilitation, and the safety of public servants.

As Katakwi prepares to lay its fallen health leader to rest, leaders and community members are calling for reflection, responsibility, and reforms to prevent future losses and safeguard those who serve the public.
