Women in Kibale County, Pallisa District, have expressed renewed hope following the launch of a Women Village Bank initiative aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting financial independence among women in the area.
The initiative was officially launched during celebrations marking the victory of Constantine Okwi, the Member of Parliament-elect for Kibale County. The celebrations were held at his ancestral home in Opusai Cell in Pallisa District.
Shs50 Million Boost for Women’s Savings
The Women Village Bank received an initial funding boost of Shs50 million, which has significantly strengthened the savings initiative.
When combined with the Shs96 million already mobilized and saved by the women themselves, the total savings for the project now stand at Shs146 million.
Hon. Okwi also pledged to raise the remaining Shs46 million within the course of the year to fully match the women’s original contribution, reaffirming his commitment to promoting women’s economic empowerment in the constituency.
Thousands of Women Join the Initiative
So far, 150 registered women’s groups, comprising approximately 4,800 women, have joined the initiative, making it one of the largest grassroots financial empowerment programs in the area.
The village bank is expected to provide women with access to affordable financial support, enabling them to start or expand small businesses and improve their household incomes.
Leaders Applaud Women Empowerment Efforts
While launching the initiative, Akaliat Toto Iteso commended Hon. Okwi for prioritizing the welfare of women in Kibale County.
She described the initiative as a rare and commendable move within the Teso sub-region, noting that it is uncommon to find leaders who deliberately invest in the financial growth of women.
Akaliat urged women to embrace the project fully, emphasizing that the initiative will help them achieve financial independence and reduce reliance on their husbands for basic household needs.
Beneficiaries Share Optimism
Several beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that it will transform their livelihoods.
Namuzungu Agnes, a resident of Kadesok Parish in Opwateta Sub County, said the village bank will help reduce poverty in her household.
She noted that access to financial support will allow her to start income-generating activities and improve her family’s standard of living.
Anna Abeja, from Omukulai Ward in Kibale Town Council, said she plans to start a clothing business in one of the trading centers to create a stable source of income.
Meanwhile, Veronica Asekenya, a resident of Kibale Parish in Kibale Sub County, explained that her husband has long carried the burden of providing for the family.
She believes the Women Village Bank will enable her to open a retail shop and contribute financially to the household, helping address daily needs without delay.
Transforming Households and Local Economy
The launch of the Women Village Bank marks a significant milestone in efforts to promote women’s financial empowerment in Kibale County.
Local leaders and beneficiaries alike believe the initiative will not only uplift households but also strengthen the local economy by supporting small-scale entrepreneurship among women.
