SOROTI — Police in the South Kyoga Region have issued a strong warning to holidaymakers and learners returning home, cautioning against involvement in criminal activities during the school holiday period.
The warning was delivered by ASP Stephen Mukombe, who noted that crime rates often rise when schools close and young people spend more time in communities.
“We question those who engage in unlawful activities. The moment you break the law, police will come for you, and we shall take you to prison,” Mukombe said.
He stressed that theft and other criminal acts, regardless of scale, will not be tolerated.
“The moment you steal anything, you become a thief and you will be arrested,” he added.
Mukombe urged the youth to engage in lawful activities and avoid shortcuts to survival through crime.
“Please go for lawful employment. Work where you can be paid for your efforts. The moment you want free things, police will come for you,” he warned.
He also encouraged members of the public to report crimes promptly, noting that police services have been decentralized to improve accessibility.
“All our police stations are available. Government has rolled out sub-county policing, and we are constructing stations to ensure every area is covered. Use the police near you and report crime,” he said.
Mukombe further called for stronger collaboration between communities and law enforcement, revealing that some officers have reported low levels of public engagement.
“Organize meetings and invite police officers. Let them engage with youth, elders, women, and the entire community on crime prevention,” he urged.
He emphasized that maintaining law and order is a shared responsibility.
“Let us all share responsibility. It is the duty of every Ugandan to report crime,” Mukombe said.
Authorities say they will remain vigilant throughout the holiday period to ensure safety and security across the region.
