Residents in Pallisa Urged to Stay Vigilant as Livestock Theft Cases Rise

By Alfred Opio

Residents of Pallisa District have been urged to remain vigilant, particularly during night hours, following an increase in cases of theft targeting domestic animals and birds in the area.

The call was made by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Pallisa, Luis Patrick Okia, who noted that criminals are increasingly stealing livestock such as goats, chickens, and turkeys under the cover of darkness.

Okia explained that the trend has become common in several parts of the district, raising concern among both residents and local authorities.

He advised community members to strengthen security around their homes and property, especially at night, and to regularly monitor their animals and other valuables to prevent thieves from taking advantage of weak security.

“Security begins at home, and every resident must be conscious and take responsibility for protecting their property,” Okia said.

The Assistant RDC also cautioned residents against excessive consumption of alcohol, warning that it often causes people to sleep heavily and unknowingly create opportunities for criminals to break into their homes.

He further encouraged residents to promptly report any suspicious individuals or activities to the relevant authorities so that timely action can be taken.

According to Okia, although security personnel are deployed across Pallisa District, it is impossible for them to guard every household at all times.

He advised that in case of an attempted theft or attack, residents should raise an alarm to alert neighbors and nearby community members who can help intervene.

However, Okia strongly warned against acts of mob justice, noting that there is an increasing tendency for suspects to be lynched by angry residents once apprehended.

He emphasized that mob justice is illegal and punishable by law, urging the public to instead hand over suspects to the police or other relevant authorities so that they can be handled through the proper legal process.

Local leaders say increased community vigilance and cooperation with security agencies will play a key role in reducing crime and protecting property across the district.
