SOROTI — Police in the East Kyoga region have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of mobile money agent Patricia Kakunda, marking a significant breakthrough in investigations into the deadly shooting that occurred earlier this month.
The suspect, identified as David Emenyu, was apprehended in Abim District where he had reportedly fled to hide following the April 3, 2026 incident in Soroti.
East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Ibrahim Saiga confirmed the arrest, noting that it was the result of coordinated intelligence-led operations by security agencies.
“This arrest brings the total number of suspects in custody to five as investigations into the murder continue,” Saiga said.
According to police, on April 11, 2026, the suspect led security teams to Akaikai Village in Soroti District, where the firearm believed to have been used in the killing was recovered. The recovery of the weapon is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the case against the suspects.
The killing of Patricia Kakunda, a mobile money agent, had sparked fear and concern among business operators in Soroti, particularly those dealing in cash transactions. The incident is part of a growing trend of attacks targeting mobile money operators across the country.
Meanwhile, leaders have used the incident to raise broader concerns about societal issues, including parenting and youth involvement in crime.
While speaking at a burial ceremony in Serere District, the State Minister for Works and Transport called for stronger parental guidance and community involvement in shaping the behavior of young people.
He emphasized that gaps in parenting and moral upbringing are contributing to rising criminal activities among youth.
The arrest of the prime suspect has brought a sense of relief to the community, though police say investigations are still ongoing to ensure that all individuals connected to the crime are brought to justice.
Authorities have reassured the public of their commitment to improving security and urged business operators to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
