Politicians Tipped on Life After Politics as Teso Leaders Turn to Agriculture

Teso Sub-region, Uganda — Politicians in the Teso Sub-region who lost in the recently concluded elections have been encouraged to explore alternative livelihoods, particularly agriculture, as a sustainable pathway to household income and community development.

Leaders say engaging in agricultural ventures could not only provide financial stability after public service but also contribute to the broader economic transformation of the Ateker region.

Victor Rex Ekesu, the outgoing LC V Chairperson of Kaberamaido District, who lost his re-election bid, said he plans to fully embrace farming after leaving office and mobilize communities to do the same.

Sharing his vision for life after politics, Ekesu described agriculture as a reliable means of fighting poverty and improving livelihoods, especially when farmers work collectively through cooperatives.

“Agriculture is the only sure way we can eliminate poverty. When smallholder farmers come together and produce in bulk, it becomes easier to attract bigger and more reliable markets,” he said.

He noted that there is already strong demand for agricultural produce in large quantities, which can only be met through coordinated and large-scale production.

Despite his electoral loss, Ekesu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, saying he leaves office without regrets.

“I am proud of what we have achieved, especially in improving roads and infrastructure across the district,” he said.

Ekesu first lost the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag to his predecessor, Albert Anthony Ejoku, during the primaries. He later contested as an independent candidate and finished second in the closely contested Local Council V race.

According to official results announced by the Kaberamaido District Returning Officer, Stella Koriang Modo, Ejoku secured 16,092 votes, defeating Ekesu, who garnered 10,841 votes.

As the political season comes to a close, leaders are urging former office holders to remain active contributors to community development through productive economic ventures beyond politics.
