Police Arrest One, Recover 261 Fake Passports in Soroti City Document Fraud Crackdown

By Staff Reporter

Security agencies in Soroti City have arrested one suspect and recovered hundreds of suspected forged documents during an intelligence-led operation targeting document fraud in the area.

The operation, conducted by the Uganda Police Force under the East Kyoga policing region together with officers from Soroti East Division, took place in Kengere Ward, Oderai Cell in Soroti City West.

According to Ibrahim Saiga, the Regional Police Commander for East Kyoga, the crackdown followed credible reports about an individual allegedly involved in the illegal sale of passports and other immigration-related documents.

Saiga said investigations that culminated in the February 22, 2026 operation were aimed at dismantling networks engaged in document forgery and fraud.

During the raid, police recovered 261 suspected fake passports, along with several certificates of good conduct and yellow fever vaccination cards believed to have been illegally obtained or forged. One suspect, whose identity has been withheld to protect ongoing investigations, was arrested at the scene.

“Preliminary investigations have commenced, and we are working to establish the source of the recovered documents and identify other accomplices connected to this illegal operation,” Saiga said.

Police warned that document fraud is increasingly linked to financial crimes, human trafficking, and illegal immigration, posing serious security risks to the public.

Authorities have urged members of the community to remain vigilant and report cases involving forged or suspicious documents to security agencies.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
