The Ministry of Health Uganda  has launched a comprehensive plan aimed at eliminating malaria in the Teso sub-region by 2030, with a key focus on the distribution of treated mosquito nets and strengthened community interventions.

The initiative, which attracted high-profile dignitaries, was officially launched on Thursday at Timisha Hotel  in Soroti City .

The plan forms part of the broader national strategy under the National Malaria Eradication and Elimination Strategic Plan, targeting high-burden areas with tailored interventions to reduce transmission and improve public health outcomes.

Speaking at the launch,Dr Jane Nabakooza , who represented the Program Manager of the National Malaria Elimination Division, emphasized the importance of community-centered approaches.

“We are using this plan to demonstrate how targeted interventions at the community and household levels can drastically reduce malaria transmission.”

The comprehensive plan prioritizes high transmission districts across the Teso sub-region, with a strong emphasis on measurable impact through coordinated efforts.

According to Ambrose Jakira  , Head of Operations for the TTN Mass Campaign, the initiative is designed to ensure that communities fully embrace malaria prevention measures.

“This plan is focused on high transmission areas to ensure communities adopt the interventions and deliver measurable results in reducing malaria cases.”

Leaders across the region have also been engaged to support the rollout and act as key mobilizers within their communities.

The Member of Parliament-elect for Kapelbyong County, Francis Akorikin  , highlighted the importance of the initiative in protecting vulnerable populations, particularly children.

“This initiative is aimed at protecting our youngest and most vulnerable population from severe malaria, which remains a major public health challenge in our region.”
Francis Akorikin

He added that leaders from different districts in Teso have been actively involved to serve as advocates and mobilizers for the Ministry of Health’s interventions at the grassroots level.

The launch marks a significant step toward reducing malaria prevalence in Teso, with stakeholders expressing optimism that sustained community engagement, combined with preventive measures such as treated mosquito nets, will accelerate progress toward elimination.

As implementation begins, authorities are calling on communities to actively participate in the program to ensure its success and safeguard public health across the region.
