Kumi Mayor Urges Residents to Embrace UCIMID Projects for Sustainable Development

By Vincent Emong
KUMI — Residents of Kumi Municipality have been urged to actively support and embrace government development projects under the Uganda Cities and Municipal Infrastructure Development (UCIMID) program to ensure lasting socio-economic transformation.
Speaking during a municipal development forum, outgoing Mayor Richard Ochom emphasized that the projects are designed to directly improve the livelihoods of ordinary citizens through better infrastructure, health services, and education.
“This is purely to ensure that a common person is trading in a clean environment and benefiting from government through improved infrastructure, health, and education,” Ochom said.
He explained that UCIMID projects are implemented through a partnership between the Government of Uganda and the World Bank, aimed at strengthening urban development and improving service delivery in municipalities.
“These projects are meant to transform our towns and improve the quality of life for residents,” he noted.
Ochom also used the platform to caution voters against electing leaders based on excitement rather than vision, stressing the importance of informed decision-making in leadership.
“Leadership is about holding a vision. Many people go wrong when they elect leaders out of excitement instead of understanding what a leader stands for,” he said.
Reflecting on his tenure since 2016, Ochom outlined four key pillars that guided his leadership: education, health, economic empowerment, and infrastructure development. He credited the progress achieved in Kumi to strong collaboration with the central government.
“When you look at the support we have received, including infrastructure projects and the modern market, it is clear that working closely with government yields results,” he said.
He highlighted notable achievements, including the upgrade of 2.2 kilometers of roads, which has significantly improved the municipality’s outlook and accessibility.
“Our town is shining because of these efforts,” he added.
As he prepares to leave office, Ochom called on residents to take ownership of ongoing and future projects, emphasizing that their success depends on community involvement.
“These projects belong to the people. They must accept them, support them, and be part of their success,” he urged.
He also expressed confidence in the next generation of leaders, encouraging them to build on the foundation already established.
“We have done our part. Those who come after us should continue from where we have stopped,” he said.
The mayor concluded by thanking the government for entrusting Kumi Municipality with development projects and expressed optimism that continued cooperation between leaders and residents will sustain progress.
