While commissioning Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) projects in Kumi. District, the Minister for Local Government, Rafael Magezi, pledged to establish a service center on Tisai Island, aimed at improving access to essential services and accelerating development in the area.
Addressing residents of Tisai Island , the minister assured the community of his personal commitment to transforming the island, which he described as one of the previously underserved areas in the district.
❝ “Tisai is my home, and don’t get tired of seeing me. When I come, I don’t come empty-handed. I come with certain things.” ❞
— Rafael Magezi
He recalled earlier engagements with leaders, including Hon. Okaasai, noting that Tisai had long been considered among the most remote areas in Kumi and even in Uganda.
Magezi highlighted ongoing improvements, including road upgrades that have significantly enhanced accessibility across the island.
❝ “We now have roads where you can drive as if you’re in a rally… like in Kampala.” ❞
— Rafael Magezi
He also commended local development initiatives such as the milk cooler project, which has strengthened the dairy sector, and the expansion of solar power that now supplies up to 46 kilowatts of electricity to households.
❝ “We are here to make sure that you develop and move together with the rest of Uganda in a positive direction.” ❞
— Rafael Magezi
The minister further described Tisai as an emerging “center of attraction” with growing potential for tourism and investment.
As part of his development agenda, Magezi announced plans to establish a fully functional service center on the island, comprising three key facilities: a primary school, a health center, and a community social center.
The proposed primary school is expected to reduce the burden on children who currently travel long distances to access education in Kumi Town.
❝ “Because we are giving you education, I am challenging the parents of Tisai Island: make sure you educate your children.” ❞
— Rafael Magezi
The planned health center will improve access to medical services, sanitation, and hygiene, while the community social center will feature internet connectivity, a hall for public engagement, and facilities aimed at empowering youth.
Magezi also tasked the LEGS program officers with ensuring that all the pledged projects are implemented, emphasizing accountability and timely delivery.
He urged residents to actively participate in the development process by prioritizing education, maintaining good health, and embracing hard work.
❝ “Keep healthy, keep strong, keep safe… we can give you medical services, we can bring electricity, but if you want to enjoy Uganda and enjoy Tisai, you must work hard. Work hard and get money into your pocket.” ❞
— Rafael Magezi
The minister’s visit signals a renewed focus on integrated local development, with leaders expressing optimism that the planned service center will bridge service gaps and improve the quality of life for residents of Tisai Island.
With continued government support and community involvement, Tisai is expected to steadily align with broader national development goals and unlock its potential as a thriving and connected community.
