A devastating fire has destroyed property worth an estimated UGX 10 million in Kumi Municipality, leaving several traders stranded and counting heavy losses.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, gutted two containers near Kumi Main Market, sending shockwaves through the local business community.

According to Kumi Main Market Chairperson John Opolot, the fire is one of the most serious incidents recorded during his tenure.

“I was shocked to receive news about the fire. This is something we have not experienced during my time in office.”

He confirmed that the cause of the fire remains unknown, adding that the matter has been reported to police for investigation.

Among the affected traders is Sofia Atim, who described the incident as a major setback that has completely disrupted her livelihood.

“We have been relying on loans to run this business, and now everything is gone. I don’t know how I will repay the loan.”

Atim revealed that she lost ten sacks of charcoal, each valued at UGX 100,000, in the blaze.

Another victim, Regina Achom, a single mother, said the fire has left her in a state of uncertainty after destroying the business she depended on to support her child’s education.

“I have been working hard to educate my child through this business, but now everything has come to a standstill.”

She lost six bags of charcoal, each costing UGX 100,000.

John Olukutu, also affected by the fire, said the incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m., when most traders were away from the area.

“By the time we were alerted and rushed to the scene, the fire had already spread and destroyed everything.”

Olukutu added that two shoe-making machines and other materials were completely destroyed in the inferno.

The incident has raised concerns about fire safety in trading areas, with traders calling for improved security measures and emergency response systems to prevent similar disasters.

Affected business owners are now appealing to the government and well-wishers for support to help them rebuild their businesses and recover from the losses.

As investigations continue, the business community in Kumi remains hopeful that the cause of the fire will be established and measures put in place to prevent future incidents.
