Oderai Leaders Warn Against Misuse of Government Mosquito Nets Amid Shortage Concerns

SOROTI — Leaders in Oderai Ward, Soroti City West Division, have cautioned residents against the misuse of government-distributed mosquito nets, emphasizing their critical role in the fight against malaria.

The warning was issued by Robert Erau, the Interim Local Council One Chairperson of Oderai Cell B, who urged community members to use the nets strictly for their intended purpose—protecting families from mosquito bites.

“It is important for the public to use these mosquito nets correctly. They are meant to protect lives, not for other uses,” Erau said.

He revealed that the ward received only 46 bales of mosquito nets from the government through the Ministry of Health, which is insufficient compared to the growing number of households in the area.

According to Erau, a total of 1,078 households were registered to benefit from the distribution exercise, raising concerns that many families may miss out due to limited supply.

In Cell B alone, 850 mosquito nets were allocated for 578 households, forcing leaders to reduce the number of nets per household to ensure wider coverage.

“We had to reduce the number of nets given per home so that at least every household can benefit,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Oderai Ward LC2 Chairperson Joseph Edimu called on the government to improve data collection and planning to avoid such shortages in future distributions.

“There is a need for accurate data to ensure fair distribution and prevent conflicts within communities,” Edimu noted.

Village Health Team (VHT) members also supported the initiative, emphasizing that proper use of mosquito nets will significantly reduce malaria cases, particularly among children who are most vulnerable.

Community members expressed appreciation to the government for the effort but called for additional support, including consistent supply of malaria drugs in health facilities.

The distribution of mosquito nets is part of the government’s ongoing campaign to combat malaria, one of the leading causes of illness in Uganda. However, leaders stress that success will depend on responsible use, proper planning, and continued support to communities
